Our Company History Wedgewood Gardens is a family-owned and operated commercial greenhouse business located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It began in 1966, when Joseph Hoplamazian, Sr. purchased what was once known as Comale’s Greenhouses. It was a 4-acre piece of property which consisted of four greenhouses, a garage and a barn. Joe, Sr. began the business by growing spring flowering plants, and then expanded into growing other seasonal flowering plants, such as poinsettias, Easter flowers, fall garden mums and foliage and houseplants. At first, most of these plants were sold to the local retail market. As the business and the facilities grew, Wedgewood began to wholesale the extra plants to local garden centers, florists and landscapers. Today, 75% of the plants grown at Wedgewood Gardens are sold wholesale to the trade.
In 1998, Joe, Jr. was able to purchase an additional four acres directly across the street from the original property. In four short years, that additional property has become an integral part of Wedgewood Gardens’ growing facility. Currently, Wedgewood operates 30 greenhouses, covering over 70,000 square feet, plus six additional acres that are used to grow outdoor plants during the summer and fall months. Our customers come to us mainly from the tri-county area of Delaware, Chester and Montgomery Counties, as well as Philadelphia and Northern Wilmington, Delaware. For the past seven years, Wedgewood Gardens has also participated in the Philadelphia Flower Show as a vendor in the Marketplace and has been awarded four ribbons for our booth display.

In 1970, Joe’s son, Joe, Jr. graduated from Rutgers University in New Jersey with a degree in horticulture and joined his father in the family business. Together they worked to build the business. By the time Joe, Jr. and his wife Sona bought Wedgewood from Joe, Sr., it was 1979, and it had grown to eight greenhouses, a new warehouse had been built and the garage had been converted into an office. Over the next 15 years, Wedgewood gradually expanded to 15 permanent and 7 temporary greenhouses on the original 4-acre property. The retail garden center was also improved – in addition to greenhouse plants, the perennial and nursery departments were added and the line of accessories was greatly expanded. A full service flower department was also introduced, through which flowers can be delivered locally and worldwide.
